So you're booking a portrait session and now it's figuring out what to wear! That's the fun part. You want to pick out outfits that will be timeless but also show your personality. If you have outfits you regularly get complimented in, or feel really confident in you definitely want to pack those. As for the rest we do cover this in our consultations, but we're also going to have quick list of tips here so you can have it as a reference guide when you're packing your go bag! Picking colours
If you already know your seasonal colour wheel great! If not follow the link here to find your personal colour pallette. While you don't need to stick to it, it definitely is a great place to start. Having clothing and accessories that compliment your skin tone is important when picking out outfits. Shop your closet I can almost guarantee you have outfits in there, pieces you bought for a special occasion, or your go to favourite outfits. When in doubt a good pair of jeans and a t shirt is absolutely timeless. You want to choose flattering necklines, and clothes that accentuate your favourite features. Keep in mind what is going to flatter your body type, if you're unsure we can go over this in a one on one consultation. There is absolutely no shame in sending outfit ideas ahead of time so we can take a look over them!
Have options Having the ability to go from casual to more formal with a mix and match of different pieces makes for a more versatile photoshoot. Going from T-Shirt and jeans to a dress shirt and slacks and then a dress gives you three very different vibes for your images. I always recommend a minimum of 4 outfits packed in your bag. You want to be able to switch things up and have versatility. Remember about bra straps as well, you are not going to want to have your bra straps showing in your pictures, so having boob tape or a strapless bra for something off shoulder is essential.
Accessories Don't be afraid to accessorize but remember less is more. Having one statement piece per outfit is more than enough because you don't want to distract from the centerpiece of the image which should be you! Although if there is sentimental reasons to be wearing certain jewelry sometimes having that nice focused shot of it can be a treat!
Dress for the weather
As Canadians we tend to think we can outlast the cold, but you don't want to be miserable during your photo session. So make sure to check the weather and dress accordingly. You can always bring a warm jacket, take it off for a couple of shots, and then warm up again! You want to make sure you are comfortable. Also leather jackets always photograph well and can keep the wind at bay!
The dreaded VPL
If you're not sure what a VPL is, let me be the first to introduce you to the visible panty line. Keep in mind especially with leggings and tighter fitting clothing you may be able to see your underwear line.
Pockets We all obsess over good pockets but one of my personal biggest pet peeves besides hairties on the wrist is phones in the pocket, make sure to bring a bag with you so you can stash your keys, phone, and wallet safely away while doing photos. You won't want to see those lumps and bumps in your final images. Complimentary Colours
If there's more than one person in your photo session you want to go with complimentary colours. Keep the colour wheel in mind with this, you don't want to clash and want to create a cohesive look when you are all together. You don't need to do the white t-shirt and jeans look, get creative with it!
These are just a few things to keep in mind when you are outfit planning! There is definitely a lot that goes into it, but don't worry. We are there for you every step of the way.
